The Professional Approach to Model Railways
John WylieHaynes Publishing, ISBN 978-1-84425-679-2, RRP £19.99
Good, in-depth and detailed books about railway modelling are pretty hard to find these days, but the second edition of John Wylie’s Professional Approach to Model Railways is one of those that breaks the mould, being one of the most in depth publications on Railway Modelling and Model Trains in general, that we’ve ever seen.
The publishers, Haynes Publishing are renowned for their incredibly detailed car maintenance manuals, and although this book doesn’t follow quite the same Step-by-Step format, it really does include more information about Railway Modelling than many could ever imagine. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a seasoned modeller, this book offers something for everyone, but especially for those that are new to the hobby.
The author takes a detailed look at every element of layout design, from ground contours, to baseboard construction, how to build model railway scenery, model railway buildings, wiring your model railway layout, rolling stock, track laying and even timetabling! It really has all bases covered.
The first edition of this book was published back in 1987, which is still clear in some areas of the content. Much of the book is printed in black and white which is a bit of a shame, with only 16 pages of colour material. Much of the book does indeed hark back to the late 80’s, particularly in the way it’s presented, but that said, the content inside is extremely informative and has definitely stood the test of time.
At just under £20 retail price and selling at almost half that on Amazon currently, this book offers exceptional value for money and for the beginner, this book is invaluable!
