Downloadable Model Railway Building designers Model Railway Scenery have released a brand new kit this week for a OO Gauge Portakabin / Site Office. The first in what we’re told will be a range of different sized Portakabins captures a 20ft by 10ft Pacemaker style portable site office in 4mm scale.
The kit is a very easy one to build. Just print it out onto lightweight white card, cut it out with a sharp craft knife, fold and glue as per the detailed instructions provided with the kit. An ideal kit for the beginner, this model will look fantastic on any modern image Model Railway Layout and will sit perfectly alongside other card kits from the likes of Superquick and Metcalfe, or the resin cast models from Hornby’s Skaledale range or Bachmanns new Scenecraft range.
Pristine & Weathered Finishes Included
Each kit comes with not one, but two finishes: Pristine & Weathered. The pristine version represents a factory fresh mobile office and would work well in a clean industrial scene. The weathered version has an extremely realistic appearance which will sit very well on a building site, in a factory car park or busy goods depot.
It’s all in the details!
Not only do you get the basic Site Office kit in pristine and weathered finishes, but also included in the kit is a wide variety of typical Industrial and Building Site warning signage, along with alternative coloured doors, barred windows and air vents so you can customise the look and feel of each and every one you build.
There are several advantages to buying downloadable model railway building kits such as this one. These include:
- Buy and Download each one once, print and build as many times as you like.
- Instant delivery… No waiting for the postman
- Low cost… No buying repeated kits to make up a number of the same building.
- Choose your own print media… Print it straight onto your favourite card or paper media
- They’re scalable too… If you fancy building any of the kits in a different scale, just change your printer scale settings to alter the models size.
Building The Kit
Construction of the OO Gauge Site Office / Portakabin kit from Model Railway Scenery is very straight forward indeed. The main building itself takes on a simple box construction, which takes no more than a couple of minutes to score, cut and fold. For our review models we used regular PVA glue to assemble the model, but UHU or any other paper friendly modelling & craft glue would work just as well.
Before you glue the main site office building together, it’s important to decide whether you wish to use any of the alternative door finishes, or indeed use the default yellow door but add a little relief to the model. If so, cut out the existing yellow door carefully and glue the alternative door behind the door aperture. Once dry, fold and glue the main body of the Portakabin together.
Once dry, you can now add your choice of signage and extras such as barred windows and air vents.
Lastly comes the fiddly bit. If you want to have your Site Office stand on legs, as do many Portakabins in the real world, you’ll need to assemble the tiny legs (these are the black strips in the kit. Cut these out and roll them very tightly between your fingers to produce very tiny 2mm x 2mm cylinders. Trim any excess card and glue the end to hold it firm. Allow to dry. Once the glue is dry, glue these to the four corners of the base of the Site Office. An alternative solution would be to mount it on a row of matchsticks that have been stained brown to represent treated timbers.
We built up both the Pristine and Weathered versions of this kit and we have to say the finished version is indeed quite impressive for the price. Compared to some of the resin versions available, you’re looking at less than 5% of the price! Depending on your chosen card and printing methods though, you may need to do a little touching up to keep everything looking as realistic as possible. We used a set of coloured felt pens to touch up the few cut white edges that were showing on the models which really improved the final appearance a lot.
At an introductory price of just £1, you really can’t go wrong. Plus, you can have the model built and on your layout in under 30mins from the moment you download it… You can’t get better than that!
I can see a lot of these popping up on Modern Image OO & HO layouts very soon indeed.
