For any beginner, building realistic yet low cost scenery is more often than not a priority. By the time we’ve paid out for Locos, Rolling Stock, Baseboard and Track, there isn’t always a lot left in the kitty to spend on scenery, so getting creating the most realistic scenery as cheaply as possible is a must. So today we’re going to take a look a quick and easy way to get your Model Train Layout scenery off to a flying start.
Scenery Starter Kits
After many years working in the Model & Hobby business, I’m absolutely astounded than there are so few of these on the market. It would be a sure fire way for any scenery company to put together a budget pack of all their most popular products, to give new railway modellers a taste of how their products perform & look on a layout, but there really aren’t that many. Of the few that do exist though, the Noch N60800 Scenery Starter Pack contains enough to really kick-start the landscaping on your layout.
Noch 60800 Scenery Starter Kit
Noch have taken a good look at their most popular scenic products and analysed what the basic requirements are to create realistic scenery on a model railway layout and created this excellent scenery starter pack. The Noch 60800 enables any beginner in railway modelling to create everything from meadows and grassed fields, small forests, hedges, bushes and there’s even a small bag of ballast in there too! With a little imagination and careful application
What You Get…
Inside the Noch 60800 Starter Pack you get generous sample bags of a range of model train scenics products. These include:
- Rock filler compound for creating rocks
- Scatter grass for creating realistic pastures and meadows together with Noch puffer bottle for easy application
- Scenic glue
- A mini grass mat with additional flock scatter material for adding further texture
- High quality lichen for creating bushes and trees
- 6 Pine Trees
- 4 Deciduous Trees
Value For Money
The Noch 60800 Scenery Starter Kit represents very good value for money, retailing at around £24 in the UK, you actually get over £35 worth of scenic products if you purchased them all separately. Plus, this set isn’t Scale Specific either. As with most things in nature, size varies greatly in pretty much everything related to scenery, so this kit will work perfectly with OO, HO, N and TT scale layouts.
Taking Things Further
Whilst the Noch scenery set gives you the majority of things to get some very realistic scenery going on your layout, the trees are perhaps a little too uniform in shape for the purist modeller, but one tip we received from Nick, the scenery expert at Gaugemaster, the distributor for Noch in the UK, is to take a pair of scissors and hack away a little at each of the trees to give them a non-uniform appearance. If you do this to each tree, creating a unique shape for each one, you can quickly and easily end up with a very realistic looking forest!
