I bet you didn’t know Ikea did baseboards for model railways did you? Well they do… Ok, it might not be the best wood to use in all circumstances, but if you’re building on a tight budget you can do worse than take a look in that wonder of wonders that is the Ikea Bargain Corner. Most stores have them and tucked away in a corner somewhere you’ll usually find a rack of sheets of all kinds of wood.
Much of it will be unsuitable such as hefty chunks of kitchen worktop etc, but if you time it right, when they’re doing new displays around their store you can often find good quality, complete sheets of chipboard in very good condition at a really bargain basement price. I picked up these 4 sheets of chipboard and 2 hardboard sheets for the backscene on our new office layout a couple of weeks ago for the princely sum of just £4.50! Each is around 2.4m long by about 60cm wide This would have easily cost £35 to £30 at my local DIY store, so it’s definitely what we Brits would call… A result! It’s not a sound-deadening and easy to work with as Sundeala, but it’s a heck of a lot more gentle on the wallet I can tell you.
Just got to keep our eyes peeled for some 2×1″ softwood to make the supporting frame and legs from and our new layout is under way.
So if you’re on the lookout for a low cost baseboard for a new layout, check out your Local Ikea!
