Hornby Skaledale OO Gauge Unpainted Buildings Review

If you’re already familiar with the Hornby OO Gauge Skaledale range, then you’ll be aware that for some years now, Skaledale buildings and accessories have always been supplied ready painted and finished, so all you had to do was open the box and place them on the desired position on your layout. This has satisfied those that desire instant gratification, but what about those that like a little choice in how their buildings are painted? Well until the new Ready to Paint range came along you were left with one of two choices: Repaint them in your chosen colours and style, undoing all the hard work the employees at the Hornby factory had done, or, go else where and opt for scratch-built or unpainted kits.

But at last, Hornby have given in to pressure from us consumers, and at least made a tiny fraction of the range available unpainted, to allow the creative types among us to crack open the acrylic paints and get stuck in. Whilst it’s not a vast selection, it does at least allow us to have a little say in the appearance of some of the Skaledale buildings we use on our layouts.

In the range currently, there are three buildings:

  • Derelict Cottage No.1 (R9643)
  • Terrace Townhouse (R9644)
  • Bungalow (R9645)

R9643 Skaledale Unpainted Derelict Cottage No 1

R9644 Skaledale Unpainted Terrace Townhouse

R9645 Skaledale Unpainted Bungalow

All are manufactured from the same high quality resin as the rest of the pre-painted range, and the standard for finish is excellent with only minimal trimming and preparation required before we can set upon them with our airbrushes and paintbrushes! The windows and doors are supplied as separate parts and can be fixed into place with the careful use of a tiny amount of impact adhesive or Super glue. We highly recommend painting the window frames prior to assembling the buildings to give a much neater finish to these detailed areas.

Our Verdict:

At last Hornby! It’s taken you far to long. If you fancy getting creative but don’t fancy scratch building or card kits, then these buildings are a great place to start.

For
Excellent levels of detail with minimal finishing required before painting.

Against
Tiny range… Come on… Pull yer finger out Hornby and do more!

Where Can I Get Them?

The three unpainted buildings in the range so far are readily available from all good model shops
