Fruit D wagons are large, ventilated, wooden bodied vans designed for the fast and efficient transportation of fruit around the railway network. First constructed back in the 1930’s for use by the Great Western Railway (GWR) and then again in the late 1950’s by British Rail (BR).
The vans were equipped with three large double side doors for fast unloading and loading and would usually be employed as part of passenger or fast goods train. They also saw service out of season too, being utilised as parcel or luggage vans. Fruit D wagons were gradually converted for permanent use as parcel vans or stores vans as road transport replaced the railways as the primary method for distributing fruit and many remained in service in this way into the 1980’s.
Dapol’s model is an excellent general purpose wagon with 4 GWR & BR livery variants in the range presently.
