Shortly after sending out last weeks email newsletter, I was privileged to receive an email from a subscriber with a generous offer to let us share photos of his scratch built projects with our readers. As I read the email, alarm bells began to ring… “I recognise that name…” I said muttered to my other half. “Who, Allan Downes?” she replied… “Yeah… Allan Downes… Model Rail… Flippin’ Heck! This guy’s a legend… It could actually be THE Allan Downes”.
I swiftly responded to the original message and to my sheer delight… it was indeed, THE Allan Downes, of The Downes Way column in Model Rail, numerous other articles, books and publications and most notably, the creator of some of the most impressive Scratch Built structures, buildings and architecture the world of Railway Modelling has ever seen. The Harlem Steel project that appeared in Model Railway a couple of years ago is simply incredible! Allan is renowned throughout the world of Railway Modelling and is well known for turning old packets, boxes, bottles and other stuff we’d normally throw away into detailed, realistic buildings, structures and industrial plant for model railway layouts & dioramas in all gauges.
Allan has so kindly given me permission to share with you, photos of some of his most amazing work in this photo gallery. If ever you need inspiration, or to see just what it’s possible to build with recycled boxes, tins, bottles and card, then this gallery is it. It’s well worth bookmarking this page too.
