Brand new track on your layout may look lovely and clean, but it certainly won’t look realistic. Even freshly laid track in the real world doesn’t stay pristine for long. The steel rails will have a layer of rust on the non-contact parts within a very short space of time, and the sleepers will begin to take on a grimy, dusty & oil spattered appearance very quickly indeed, especially on a busy mainline. So it’s important to consider weathering the track on your layout to give it a more realistic, toned down appearance, if you’d like your layout to look as life-like as possible.
In this video, Kevin explains his simple weathering techniques and walks us through the step by step process of weathering OO/HO scale track using a basic airbrush setup, but the principle is exactly the same for other scales too.
