This week Steve sent in this quick and easy way to make chain link fencing for N gauge layouts. It’s really easy to make and uses low cost ribbon from a haberdashery store. It could probably also work for OO scale too if a suitable, slightly chunkier ribbon can be found! I’ll keep my eyes peeled… Anyway, here’s Steve to tell us how he makes it…
“I have been searching for some time for a suitable material to make N scale chain link fencing and came across this product the other day whilst browsing through a Spotlight store (the NZ equivalent of Michaels in the US I guess).
Being 10.5mm wide, it is almost a perfect 6 N scale feet (actually 5.5ft). Also, the concentration of horizontal fibres at the edges make it look as though there is either large gauge wire, or other support at the top and bottom of the completed fence.
The fence vertical posts are made from 0.64mm styrene rod set into 0.5 x 1.5mm styrene strip.
The photos show it before being painted and the spool of ribbon in case anyone wishes to search for a supply.
